How Fire Alarm Systems Help Your Business

It is surprising how few businesses consider a large fire loss in their business continuity plans. There is often an assumption that the fire service will prevent a large fire loss, but the fire service is there to protect people, not businesses. They will put the fire out to make it safe, and that means dumping a huge amount of water on your building. If the fire does not ruin it, the water damage will.

It is good to take extra precautions, because these changes can make the difference between a controlled fire and a completely devastating one. At GorSmith Electrical we are committed to helping companies protect their staff, customers, the general public and the bus Ines itself by reducing the risk of a fire at their premises. Part of our role is to educate people about why passive fire protection measures are not just a question of legal box-ticking, but also a worthwhile investment in their organisation’s future.

Typical / Estimated Fire Alarm System Prices

The price of a fire safety system will vary depending on what spec/system you want and the design and the type of building you want it in. We can give advice and help you with what system is best for you by carrying out a Fire Risk Assessment and then a free quote.

Emergency Lights

Emergency lighting is essential lighting for an emergency when the main power supply is cut, and normal electrical illumination fails. The loss of mains electricity could be the result of a fire or a power cut. Without emergency lighting this could lead to sudden darkness and possible danger to occupants, either through physical danger or panic. As well as highlighting the fire exits of a building, correctly located emergency lighting provides essential illumination throughout the escape route. It is needed in places such as, steps and stairways, changes in direction and fire and first aid points.

Emergency light testing including monthly ‘flick tests’ and yearly ‘3-hour tests’ all come as part of our emergency lighting maintenance package. Furthermore, we can evaluate the need for lighting protection by carrying out Risk Assessments, which then allows us to create a design to blend with your building. Our highly experienced installers also maintain existing systems and will provide condition reports with recommendations. We provide annual certification to meet all statutory requirements including BS EN 62305.

Learn more about Emergency Lighting?

You may be wondering if you need an emergency lighting test or service. UK fire safety legislation stipulates that emergency lights must undergo a full test once a year, and that the property must be ‘flick tested’ at least once a month.

The responsible person (e.g., building manager) must be able to demonstrate that the hardware of fire safety systems and their maintenance are adequate to protect the occupants. Fire protection products and related services should be fit for their purpose and professionally installed and maintained in accordance with the relevant British Standard.

The legal requirement is that non-domestic buildings must be always safe, even if mains power failure occurs. Therefore, nearly all such buildings must have emergency lighting fitted. We evaluate the need for lighting protection by carrying out Risk Assessments, which then allow us to create a design to blend with your building. Our highly experienced installers also maintain existing systems and will provide condition reports with recommendations. We provide annual certification to meet all statutory requirements including BS EN 62305.

Typical / Estimated Emergency Lighting Test Prices

Emergency light tests can vary in prices depending on how many lights require testing. Typically, a monthly ‘Flick test’ will cost around £50 and the 3 – hour shutdown test can cost around £200.

Fire Assessments

Fire Risk Assessments ensure that you meet your legal obligations imposed by the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.

  • responsible for business premises
  • an employer or self-employed with business premises
  • responsible for a part of a dwelling where that part is solely used for business purposes.
  • a charity or voluntary organisation
  • a contractor with a degree of control over any premises
  • providing accommodation for paying guests

What is a Fire Risk Assessment?

  • A Fire risk assessor makes a thorough tour of your premises, evaluating the building condition and age, its layout and building contents to identify potential fire hazards, ignition sources and combustible materials and means of escape in the case of fire.
  • The assessor also notes who works in the building and where, current fire safety signage, current protocols for fire prevention and management, current fire safety equipment, its condition and maintenance and existing fire safety training and drills.

It is important to remember that fire risk assessment is a continuous process and as such must be monitored and audited. New and existing control measures should be maintained to make sure they are still working effectively.

However, if you introduce changes to your premises your original risk assessment may not address any new hazards or risks arising from them. For this reason it is also important to review and revise your assessment regularly.

Examples of why a review should take place are as follows, but the list is by no means exhaustive:

  • A new work process may introduce additional fuels or ignition sources
  • Changes to furniture layout or internal partitions
  • Increasing number of staff
  • Occupying another floor of the building

Typical Price of a Fire Risk Assessment?

Our charges are very much dependent on the size of your premises, number of employees and purpose of the building.
